Location famous for Suiseki

There are many areas where Suiseki stones are found in Japan.

This is because Japan is located among Filipino plate, Pacific plate, North American plate, and Eurasian plate and as a result of the subduction of Filipino plate and Pacific plate which means most of the geological basement of Japan is made up of accretionary complexes.

And also, Japan is situated in a volcanic zone on the Pacific Ring of Fire.

By these reasons, Suiseki stones which require fineness, hardness, and toughness are found in many areas in Japan.

Having said that Japan is made up of accretionary complexes in a large sense, Suiseki stone has its own characteristic in each area. Because of the characteristic, each area is considered as brand.

Kamui Cotan Seki which is found from Kamui Cotan area in Hokkaido has a specific shiny feature and Hakkaisan Seki which is from Mizunashi river in Niigata has a specific heavy feature.

In Kansai area, Kamogawa river, Setagawa river, and Sajigawa river are considered as three major localities of famous Suiseki.
