Ryugan

Ryugan

There is another term to describe texture of stone surface in Suiseki.

It is Ryugan, 龍眼.

If translating literally, it means dragon eye in English.

I’m not sure the reason why it is called dragon eye but it might look like sharp eyes of dragon on the surface.

Anyway, let's look Ryugan:

Ryugan(Ibi River Stone):
Ryugan(龍眼)

On the surface of the stone, the situation that there are inclusions of white silica or limestone is Ryugan.

As mentioned above, although Ryugan is the term to describe stone surface, Ryugan stone means some stones used often in Bonsai. Ibi Stone, Tanba Ryugan Stone, or Hino Ryugan Stone are famous.

Ryugan(龍眼)

Ryugan Stone is used under root of a tree. Rough surface of Ryugan Stone is good for Bonsai view.

Ryugan(龍眼)

Going back to the original topic, since Ryugan is inclusion of white silica or limestone, waterfall of Taki-ishi is also Ryugan. However, Ryugan is not used that much. Because it is waterfall or Monyo-seki if white silica is some kind of pattern.
