Modern Suiseki

Sudachi

In Suiseki, the word of "Sudachi" （巣立） is used to explain the condition of the stone surface.

I think it is old or minor word and is not used often recently. If you say "Sudachi" in Japan, almost people consider it to be a fledgling or leaving the nest.

To avoid a misunderstanding, "鬆" or "す" is used for "巣" . "鬆" or "す" means the condition having open or empty spaces and thus airy like a sponge, so some says this Japanese radish is old and having "鬆" or "す".

In Suiseki, although old Sudachi, "巣立" is used as an idiomatic term, it is used for explaining the condition of the surface of stones. It means the condition having "鬆" or "す".

The following are "Sudachi"（巣立）:

Hakkai-seki, Sudachi（巣立）

Sengen-ishi, Sudachi（巣立）

By Sudachi, by its complicated surface, stones take on a new aspect and preferred.

However, please note that Sudachi should be on hard stone. Fine, hard stone with Sudachi is preferred in Suiseki.

If it is not hard, it is just fragile stone.
