About Through hole

Nuke is one of categories of Suiseki.

Nuke means through hole in Japanese and which means stone having through hole.

If it is blind hole, it should be Tamari-ishi, therefore Nuke should have through hole.

It is the same as Tamari-ishi, there are some stones which can be Toyama-ishi or Shimagata-ishi and having hole.

In that case, however the hole should be small enough to be unnoticed.

People tend to pay attention to the hole naturally if the stone has a hole.

Usually, the stone is called Nuke if it has through hole even if the overall shape of the stone is Toyama or Shimagata since hole is very noticeable.

Although hole is very noticeable, it is nothing if the hole is penetrated, however, it’s like window or door to another world.

Nothing seems to be as if having some meaning.

Further, existence of through hole itself is mysterious although stone is hard, so Nuke is popular in Suiseki collectors.

Suiseki collectors always want one or two good Nuke.

Unfortunately, I have no good Nuke, so would like to quote again from緋山酔恭の山水石美術館.
