Sado Hamochi Goshiki-ishi-I, 佐渡羽茂五色石
Sado Hamochi Goshiki-ishi
Sado Hamochi Goshiki Stone is an extremely rare stone that originated in Hamochimachi, a town that once existed on the southern coast of Sado Island. Because it is difficult to obtain and there are many counterfeits in circulation, it is best to consider it a stroke of good fortune if you come across one. Hamochimachi is now part of Sado City due to the merger of the entire Sado region.

Hamochi goshiki-ishi was discovered by chance during the Pilot Development Project, a large-scale farmland development and improvement project that was launched in the late 1950s with the aim of creating a specialty area for Okesa persimmons. However, the vein was narrow and deep, and it was quickly depleted, so production was extremely low.
Furthermore, this was a time of unprecedented Suiseki boom in Japan, and it has become difficult to identify the Hamo Goshiki Stones that were taken from Sado. For these reasons, it cannot be denied that there is some doubt as to whether the Hamo Goshiki Stone introduced here is genuine.
It is safe to find pleasure in continuing to pursue it as a romantic pursuit for connoisseurs, and not actually get involved in it.
As described in old books as Sado Hamochi Menou(Agate), Hamochi Goshiki-ishi is rich in quartz and is prone to contain transparent chalcedony, and as the name Hamochi Goshiki-ishi suggests, it can contain colors such as red, yellow, and green. Naturally, some areas may not contain green, so it does not necessarily have five colors.
The difference between Sado Kinkou-seki and Sado Hamochi Goshiki-ishi is that Sado Kinkoseki is mainly red with trailing white bands, while Sado Hamochi Goshiki-ishi is rich in quartz, making it entirely quartz-based and transparent, and sometimes containing chalcedony. Also, although the colors are mainly red and yellow, the differences between the colors are quite clear.
